The Big News: Hurricane Matthew
Story & Photos by Micayla T.
Fayetteville, NC - Hurricane Matthew reached Fayetteville on the morning of Saturday, October 8, 2016. The Fayetteville Observer described it as a Category 5 waterlogged Godzilla lurching toward the Southeast coast. It was down to a Category 1 hurricane when it reached Fayetteville. The Weather Channel said that the winds in Fayetteville reached 62MPH and it dumped 14” of rain on our city. The Cape Fear river got up to an all time high of 58 feet. There was also a storm the week before that brought rain to our area, so things started to flood very quickly. There were 775,000 people that lost power in North Carolina and more that 1,000 people had to move to shelters in Fayetteville.
Downtown had a lot of flooded areas, but the school did not get any water damage. The playground was covered in mud and debris. The river was overflowing near the school and there was also damage to books at the library. Many roads were under water and started to wash away. Repairs in the city could take up to a year to repair.
