The Chameleon Collective: Web Edition - Issue #2
Created by the Digital Design & Photo Club
We interviewed TCEA’s inspirational and stylish songbird, Ms. Jarae Payton to learn all about TCEA’s very own Encore Ensemble! Recently they performed at the Winter Spectacular in December, where they sang songs like “The Grinch”, a favorite of the group according to Ariel, a 4th grade Ensemble member.
We started off by asking Ms. Payton: Why did you start the Encore Ensemble?
Ms. Payton: I started the Encore Ensemble as a way of giving students that enjoy singing an opportunity. During a regular school day there is not a dedicated time to have a choir right now so I decided to do it after school.
We asked Ms. Payton: How long have you been
doing the ensemble?
Ms. Payton: It started last January so we are now passing one year of Encore Ensemble.
We then decided to find out a little more about Ms. Payton and what is like teach during the day instead of ensemble.
We asked: How long have you been teaching music?
Ms. Payton: I have been teaching music for about six years. I started at a middle school teaching 6th through 8th grade, and then I came to TCEA in 2014 when the school first opened.
Ms. Payton taught at Spring Lake Middle School
before coming to join TCEA as part of the arts team.
We asked: How is teaching ensemble different then teaching a classroom?
Ms. Payton: In choir I’m concerned about teaching voice and about teaching the music and songs, but in the classroom I have to keep digging deeper. I teach about theory and concepts. Every week I have to give the students a little more, even composing.
You can catch the next Encore Ensemble performance at the Spring Spectacular on May 4, 2017 at 6:00pm!

Special Note: This month’s feature article was started first by two staff members, then picked up by another, and finally completed by Katelyn C. and Micayla T. - with a bit of help from Mrs. Brownlee. Deadlines are real in the real world, but we are learning here at CC - and that’s the point! Life Lesson: Finish what you start, know when to ask for help, and be grateful for those who help to pick up you back up when you stumble.
